Angel Montano Sentenced to 40 Years for Deadly Armed Robbery Spree

INDIANAPOLIS- The grim saga of Angel Montano, 22, of Indianapolis, reached a conclusion this week as the defendant was sentenced to 40 years in federal prison for his role in a deadly armed robbery spree that terrorized the city.

Montano and his co-conspirators embarked on a crime spree between July 19 and July 28, 2020. Their modus operandi was simple yet terrifying: using online marketplaces OfferUp and LetGo to lure unsuspecting victims to meetups for fake cell phone sales. But once the marks arrived, they met violence.

In the first three robberies, Montano and his crew used iPhones as bait, demanding cash from buyers who had no idea of the danger ahead. The fourth and final robbery ended in tragedy. A 26-year-old man, lured to a meeting point by Montano’s promise of a cell phone sale, met with horror instead when three masked men approached his car. The victim attempted to escape but was gunned down on the spot, leaving his brother severely injured from multiple gunshot wounds.

U.S. Attorney Myers summed up the atrocity, “The defendant’s crime spree demonstrated his utter disregard for human life. His choice to engage in senseless violence took an innocent man from his loving family forever.” The sentence of four decades in federal prison was handed down by Chief U.S. District Court Judge Tanya Walton Pratt.

The investigation into Montano’s crimes was a joint effort between the FBI and IMPD, with Assistant United States Attorney Lawrence D. Hilton leading the prosecution. This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program dedicated to reducing violent crime and gun violence in communities across the country.

Angel Montano’s sentence serves as a stark reminder that violent crime will not be tolerated in Indianapolis, and the federal government is committed to holding those responsible accountable. The community can take solace in the fact that justice has been served for this heinous act of violence.”
