Identity Thief Sentenced to Probation in W.Va.
MARTINSBURG, WEST VIRGINIA – A Virginia resident has been ordered to pay more than $22,000 in restitution and sentenced to five years probation for identity theft, according to United States Attorney Bill Powell.
Angela Dawn Roberts, 42, of Stephenson, Virginia, was found guilty of one count of identity theft in July 2017. Roberts admitted to using another’s identifying information to commit bank fraud on June 27, 2016, in Berkeley County, West Virginia.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Lara Omps-Botteicher on behalf of the government, with the Federal Bureau of Investigation conducting the investigation. Chief U.S. District Judge Gina M. Groh presided over the case.
The charges against Roberts stem from her use of another’s identifying information to commit bank fraud. The scheme, which occurred in 2016, resulted in significant financial losses for the victim. Roberts’ actions are a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of identity theft.
