Thief in the Shadows: Webster Woman Sentenced for Bank Theft

An investigation by the FBI and South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation led to the conviction of Angelica Jean Gebur, a former CorTrust Bank employee from Webster, South Dakota.

Gebur, 43, was sentenced on August 8, 2022, by U.S. District Judge Charles B. Kornmann to 60 days in federal prison, followed by two years of supervised release.

She was also ordered to pay restitution to Needs Anonymous Thrift Store in the amount of $38,986 and a special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund in the amount of $100.

Gebur pleaded guilty on May 17, 2022, to charges of Theft, Embezzlement, and Misapplication by Bank Employee.

The crimes took place between March 22, 2018, and June 18, 2021, when Gebur, as the lead customer service representative for the CorTrust Bank branch in Webster, defrauded the bank of more than $1,000 in moneys, funds, assets, and securities entrusted to its custody.

The investigation found that Gebur would often receive deposits from Needs Anonymous Thrift Store, which did not include a completed deposit form, but rather a handwritten note of the total deposit amount. Gebur would then steal some of the cash from the thrift store’s intended deposits and use it for her own purposes.

This case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Ann M. Hoffman, and Gebur was allowed to self-report to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service by September 13, 2022.
