Anil Patel, a 45-year-old former Metairie resident, has been charged with tax fraud, according to a bill of information filed by the U.S. Attorney’s Office. Patel is accused of filing a false tax return with the Internal Revenue Service.
On August 6, 2009, Patel signed and filed a 2008 U.S. Individual Income Tax Return (Form 1040) with the IRS, allegedly failing to report approximately $426,744 in income.
U.S. Attorney Dana J. Boente reiterated that the bill of information is merely a charge and that the guilt of the defendant must be proven beyond a reasonable doubt.
The case was investigated by the Special Agents of the Internal Revenue Service, and the prosecution is being handled by Assistant United States Attorney Jon Maestri.
Patel faces a maximum term of imprisonment of 3 years, as well as a fine of $250,000 and 1 year of supervised release following any term of imprisonment if convicted.
Anil Patel, whose exact current status is unclear, was a resident of Metairie, Louisiana, at the time of the alleged crime.
The bill of information alleges that Patel committed tax fraud by filing a false tax return, which is punishable under federal law.
