A 44-year-old Mount Pleasant, Pennsylvania, man has pleaded guilty to conspiring to create and distribute animal crush videos, which show the violent torture of monkeys. Joseph Garrett Buckland admitted to sending money on more than 15 occasions to commission these disturbing videos, which were then distributed to other group members and chat groups via an instant messaging application. The guilty plea was entered in federal court, where Buckland faces charges for his role in the creation and distribution of these obscene videos.
The investigation into Buckland’s activities was led by the United States Attorney’s Office, in partnership with other law enforcement agencies. According to officials, producing and trafficking in animal crush videos is a serious federal crime that not only causes harm to innocent animals but also contributes to a broader market of criminal depravity.
As part of his guilty plea, Buckland acknowledged that he and others conspired to pool their money to commission the creation of animal crush videos, which show living non-human mammals being purposely crushed, burned, drowned, suffocated, impaled, or otherwise subjected to serious bodily injury. The videos were then distributed to other group members and chat groups, where they were shared and enjoyed by those with a sadistic interest in animal torture.
The case against Buckland serves as a warning to others who engage in this type of sadistic behavior: animal crush videos are illegal, and those who create and distribute them will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. With the help of law enforcement partners, the Justice Department will continue to investigate and prosecute all crimes involving violations of federal law related to animal cruelty.
