Attempt to Detonate Improvised Explosive Device at MacDill Air Force Base
Tampa, Florida – In a shocking turn of events, Ann Mary Zheng, a 27-year-old resident of Land O’Lakes, has been charged by indictment with assisting after the fact and evidence tampering related to an attempt to detonate an improvised explosive device at the MacDill Air Force Base Visitor’s Center in Tampa.
According to the indictment, Ann Mary Zheng, knowing that her brother, Alen Zheng, had attempted to damage government property by fire or explosion, assisted him in order to hinder and prevent his apprehension, trial, and punishment. The indictment also charges Ann Mary Zheng with corruptly altering, destroying, mutilating, and concealing a 2010 black Mercedes-Benz GLK 350 with the intent to impair its integrity and availability for use in the federal prosecution of Alen Zheng.
Ann Mary Zheng faces a maximum penalty of 30 years in federal prison if convicted on all counts. The indictment also notifies Ann Mary Zheng that the United States is seeking an order of forfeiture in the amount of $5,000, the proceeds of the charged criminal conduct.
An indictment is merely a formal charge that a defendant has committed one or more violations of federal criminal law, and every defendant is presumed innocent unless, and until, proven guilty.
This case was investigated by the Joint Terrorism Task Force. It will be prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorneys Lauren Stoia and David P. Sullivan.
Ann Mary Zheng’s brother, Alen Zheng, is not mentioned in the indictment as having been charged or convicted in connection with the attempted detonation of the improvised explosive device. However, it is clear that Ann Mary Zheng’s actions were intended to assist her brother in evading law enforcement and avoiding prosecution.
The attempted detonation of the improvised explosive device at MacDill Air Force Base is a serious threat to national security and public safety. It is a reminder of the importance of vigilance and cooperation between law enforcement agencies in preventing and investigating such crimes.
