Jacob Freeman, 22, of Ansonia, stood before a federal judge yesterday and admitted his role in flooding the Naugatuck Valley with crack cocaine. The guilty plea, entered before U.S. District Judge Jeffrey A. Meyer in New Haven, marks a key conviction in a broader crackdown on a tightly organized local drug ring.
Freeman pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute, and to distribute, cocaine base — known on the street as crack cocaine. The charge stems from a months-long investigation into a trafficking network that operated with military precision, using a single cellphone passed between members to coordinate drug sales across the Valley.
Court records reveal that between May and September 2017, investigators conducted multiple controlled buys of crack directly from Freeman and his co-conspirators. The shared phone strategy was meant to evade detection, but instead became a critical piece of evidence linking each member to the operation’s daily grind of distribution.
Now facing a maximum sentence of 20 years in federal prison, Freeman has been locked up since his arrest on November 15, 2017. With sentencing set for May 30, 2018, prosecutors are pushing for accountability in a region long plagued by open-air drug markets and violent turf disputes.
The investigation was led by the Drug Enforcement Administration’s New Haven Task Force, with critical support from the Ansonia and Derby Police Departments. Their joint effort dismantled a network that thrived on secrecy, addiction, and desperation.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Jocelyn Courtney Kaoutzanis is prosecuting the case, signaling federal resolve in targeting not just street-level dealers but the entire infrastructure of organized drug operations in Connecticut’s struggling industrial towns.
