HAMMOND – In a shocking turn of events, a Gary man was sentenced to 68 months in prison after pleading guilty to being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm. Antawan Smith, 35 years old, was handed down the sentence by United States District Court Judge Philip P. Simon.
According to documents in the case, on February 26, 2024, law enforcement responded to a complaint of an armed man near a house. Upon their arrival, officers encountered Smith and recovered a loaded semi-automatic pistol with an extended magazine from him. He attempted to flee but was apprehended.
Smith’s criminal history revealed that he has 5 prior felony convictions, and as such, is prohibited from possessing the firearm. This glaring disregard for the law has led to severe consequences for the defendant.
The case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives Indiana High Intensity Drug Trafficking Task Force and the Gary Police Department. Assistant United States Attorney Michael J. Toth led the prosecution.
This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence. The initiative is a collaborative effort between law enforcement and the community to make neighborhoods safer.
The indictment of Antawan Smith serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of breaking the law. The defendant’s actions demonstrate a blatant disregard for the safety of others and the community at large.
As the Grimy Times continues to investigate and report on such cases, it is clear that the fight against crime remains a top priority. The people of Gary and surrounding areas demand justice and accountability for those who commit heinous crimes.
With this sentencing, the community can rest a little easier knowing that justice has been served. However, the war on crime is far from over, and the Grimy Times will continue to bring you updates on such cases as they unfold.
