Deyon Washington, 45, of Gary, Indiana, has been sentenced to 51 months in prison for being a felon in possession of a firearm. The sentence was handed down by United States District Court Judge Gretchen S. Lund after Washington pleaded guilty to the charge.
According to documents in the case, Washington was a passenger in a vehicle that was pulled over in Valparaiso, Indiana, on September 11, 2021. During a search of the vehicle, law enforcement recovered a loaded pistol with an extended magazine attached to it. This discovery led to Washington’s arrest and subsequent guilty plea.
Washington’s criminal history revealed that he was previously convicted of felony armed robbery in 2001 and 2002. These convictions disqualified him from possessing any firearm or ammunition, making his possession of the loaded pistol a serious offense.
The case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, and prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Michael J. Toth. The sentence of 51 months in prison will be followed by 24 months of supervised release, ensuring that Washington will be closely monitored upon his release from prison.
This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence in communities across the country. The program brings together all levels of law enforcement and the communities they serve to make neighborhoods safer for everyone. By targeting individuals like Washington, who have a history of violent crime and are prohibited from possessing firearms, PSN hopes to prevent future offenses and reduce the risk of gun violence.
The Department of Justice launched a violent crime reduction strategy in May 2021, strengthening PSN and focusing on core principles such as fostering trust and legitimacy in communities, supporting community-based organizations, and setting focused enforcement priorities. The sentencing of Deyon Washington is a testament to the effectiveness of this strategy and the commitment of law enforcement agencies to reducing violent crime and making communities safer.
Acting United States Attorney M. Scott Proctor announced the sentencing, highlighting the importance of holding individuals accountable for their actions and ensuring that those who pose a threat to public safety are brought to justice. The sentencing of Deyon Washington serves as a reminder that law enforcement agencies are working tirelessly to prevent violent crime and protect communities, and that those who break the law will face serious consequences.
