Huntsville Man Sentenced to 9 Years in Prison for Robbing U.S. Postal Carrier
A federal judge in the Northern District of Alabama has sentenced Anthony Darryl Barber, Jr., 24, of Montgomery, to 109 months in prison for the armed robbery of a U.S. Postal carrier. Barber pleaded guilty to the crime on October 24, 2024.
On May 3, 2023, Barber approached a U.S. Postal carrier delivering mail at an apartment complex in Huntsville, pointed a gun, and stole the carrier’s arrow key, a specialized key used to open U.S. Postal Service mailboxes. Barber then fled the scene in a white Nissan Altima.
A Morgan County Sheriff’s Office sergeant was in the area when dispatchers advised of a stolen car tag affixed to the vehicle. The sergeant conducted a traffic stop, but Barber sped away, leading to a high-speed chase. Barber finally stopped and surrendered to the officer. A search of the vehicle revealed a Glock 27, Gen 5 .40 caliber pistol, a beige ski mask, and the stolen postal arrow key.
The U.S. Postal Inspection Service (USPIS) investigated the case with the assistance of the Morgan County Sheriff’s Office. Assistant U.S. Attorney Davis Barlow prosecuted the case.

The crime occurred on May 3, 2023, and Barber pleaded guilty on October 24, 2024. The defendant was driving a stolen vehicle and possessed a firearm at the time of the arrest.
Barber’s sentence is in addition to the ongoing investigation into the stolen car tag. The U.S. Postal Inspection Service and the Morgan County Sheriff’s Office continue to work together to combat mail theft and protect the public.
