ST. PAUL, MN – A St. Paul man is facing the consequences after a brazen shootout erupted outside Born’s Bar in September 2021. Anthony Charles Deberry, 41, was found guilty by a federal jury this week of illegally possessing a firearm, a charge stemming directly from the violent incident.
The five-day trial, presided over by Judge Eric C. Tostrud, revealed a volatile scene. Evidence showed Deberry engaged in a heated verbal dispute with another man inside Born’s Bar on the afternoon of September 18, 2021, ultimately leading to his ejection. But Deberry didn’t leave quietly. He lingered, continuing to escalate the conflict.
Later that evening, Deberry returned, following a group of men as they exited the bar. He then brandished a 9mm handgun – complete with an activated laser sight – and shortly after, shots rang out. Deberry himself sustained multiple gunshot wounds in the exchange and was rushed to Regions Hospital. Surveillance footage proved crucial, capturing Deberry attempting to conceal the firearm under a parked car after the chaos.
Responding officers from the St. Paul Police Department quickly recovered Deberry’s weapon and numerous spent cartridge casings. The evidence painted a clear picture of Deberry’s involvement in the shooting. Crucially, prosecutors demonstrated that Deberry’s prior felony convictions permanently barred him from legally possessing any firearms or ammunition.
The case was a joint effort between the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the St. Paul Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Joseph S. Teirab and Lindsey E. Middlecamp successfully prosecuted the case, presenting the evidence that led to Deberry’s conviction on one count of possession of a firearm as a felon.
A sentencing hearing is scheduled for a later date, where Deberry will learn his fate. The U.S. Attorney’s Office, led by Andrew M. Luger, is prosecuting the case. This conviction serves as a stark reminder that illegally possessing firearms, particularly after a violent outburst, will not be tolerated and will be met with federal prosecution.
