Jeffrey Brown, a 35-year-old man from Richford, Vermont, was involved in a heated dispute with his neighbors in August 2025. The situation escalated when Brown pointed a handgun at one of his neighbors, with children present. Brown, a convicted felon, is prohibited from possessing firearms due to his prior felony convictions for Harassment and Threatening in Connecticut state courts.
Brown’s actions led to a guilty plea for being a felon in possession of a firearm. On June 25, 2026, he was sentenced to 36 months in prison, followed by a 3-year term of supervised release.
The case was investigated by the Vermont State Police and the United States Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF). First Assistant United States Attorney Jonathan A. Ophardt acknowledged the efforts of these agencies in investigating the case.
The prosecution was handled by Assistant U.S. Attorney Eugenia Cowles, while Brown was represented by Assistant Federal Public Defender Steven Barth. The sentence was imposed by United States District Judge Mary Kay Lanthier.
