Jason Douglas, a 42-year-old felon from Saint Albans, Vermont, wreaked havoc in Burlington on July 29, 2024, when he pointed a gun at two men during separate disputes in broad daylight. The first incident occurred on College Street, where Douglas emerged from a vehicle, loaded a round into the chamber of his firearm, and pointed it at another man. While Burlington Police Officers were investigating this incident, they received another report of Douglas pulling a handgun on a man during a fight on Main Street.
Douglas’s vehicle was soon located, and a loaded Ruger LCP .380-caliber pistol was seized from the driver’s side. His extensive criminal history, including convictions for kidnapping, burglary, and domestic assault, prohibited him from possessing a firearm under federal law.
On June 16, 2026, Chief United States District Judge Christina Reiss sentenced Douglas to 65 months’ imprisonment, followed by a three-year term of supervised release, after he pleaded guilty to being a felon in possession of a firearm on February 26, 2026.
The swift intervention of the Burlington Police Department and the investigatory assistance of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives were commended by First Assistant United States Attorney Jonathan A. Ophardt, who noted that Douglas’s actions were ‘brazen’ and posed a significant threat to public safety.
