Heavy Handed Justice: 5 Years for ‘Heavy D’ in New Haven
A New Haven man is heading to the slammer for five years after being caught with a loaded handgun in his possession. ANTHONY DUNCAN, 32, also known as ‘Heavy D,’ was sentenced to 63 months in federal prison, followed by three years of supervised release, for unlawfully possessing firearms.
The charges stem from a 2017 incident where New Haven Police officers stopped a vehicle Duncan was operating at the intersection of Starr Street and Sheffield Avenue. A search of the vehicle revealed a loaded Smith and Wesson M&P Shield .40 caliber handgun.
But that wasn’t Duncan’s first run-in with the law. Prior to the traffic stop, he had been convicted in state court of felony drug, robbery, and weapon offenses. Just a few months prior to the traffic stop, Duncan was the victim of a shooting at the same intersection.
On June 26, 2018, investigators attempted to arrest Duncan on a federal complaint, but he made a break for it, driving his vehicle at a high rate of speed down a dead end road and across a field. After the car was no longer operational, he fled on foot into a wooded area where he was apprehended.
A subsequent search of his residence revealed another firearm and quantities of crack cocaine and heroin. Duncan has been detained since his arrest in 2018, and state charges related to his flight from law enforcement and illegal possession of a firearm and narcotics are still pending.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Patricia Stolfi Collins, and was part of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and the New Haven Police Department’s investigation into Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime and making neighborhoods safer for everyone.
