In a shocking turn of events, a Rosebud, South Dakota man has been sentenced for Felon in Possession of a Firearm. Anthony Farmer, 32, was found guilty of the crime.
The incident occurred on April 1, 2015, when Farmer was arrested for sex offender registration violations. At the time of his arrest, he was in possession of a .22 caliber rifle.
Farmer’s history with the law is checkered, to say the least. In 2010, he was convicted of Abusive Sexual Contact with a Child and received a 48-month custody sentence, to be followed by a 5-year term of supervised release.
On January 20, 2016, Farmer pled guilty to Felon in Possession of a Firearm, a charge stemming from the same incident that landed him in trouble for sex offender registration violations.
United States District Court Judge Roberto A. Lange sentenced Farmer to 27 months in custody, 3 years of supervised release, and $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund. Farmer was also ordered to forfeit his firearm.
This case was investigated by Rosebud Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Services. Assistant U.S. Attorney Carrie G. Sanderson prosecuted the case.
Farmer was immediately turned over to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of firearm possession by felons.
