A convicted felon is back in federal crosshairs after being indicted on charges tied to fentanyl and illegal firearms. Anthony J. Board Jr., 33, with residences in Akron and Barberton, Ohio, faces one count of possession with intent to distribute fentanyl and one count of being a felon in possession of firearms and ammunition.
On December 14, 2016, Akron Police Department Narcotics Unit detectives and Drug Enforcement Administration Task Force Officers raided Board Jr.’s Akron residence under a state search warrant. Inside, they seized approximately 25 grams of fentanyl, two firearms, and a bullet-proof vest, according to court records.
The same day, Barberton Police Narcotics Detectives and DEA Task Force Officers executed a second state search warrant at Board Jr.’s Barberton home. There, they recovered two additional firearms, including a semi-automatic rifle—further evidence in a pattern of illegal weapon possession.
Board Jr. is legally prohibited from possessing firearms or ammunition due to multiple prior felony convictions, including burglary, escape, and improper discharge of a firearm. Despite this, he maintained armed, dual residences in Summit County, raising red flags with law enforcement.
The investigation was led by the Akron Police Department Narcotics Unit, the Barberton Police Department, and the Drug Enforcement Administration’s Akron Office. The case is now in the hands of Assistant United States Attorney Aaron P. Howell, who will prosecute in federal court.
An indictment is not a conviction. Board Jr. is entitled to a fair trial where the government must prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. If convicted, sentencing will be determined by the court, weighing his criminal history, role in the offenses, and the nature of the charges.
