Anthony Luizzi, Fentanyl Trafficking, New York 2023

A 24-year-old man from Halfmoon, New York, has been sentenced to 210 months in prison for his role in a large-scale fentanyl trafficking operation in the state.

Anthony Luizzi was found guilty of conspiracy to distribute and possess with intent to distribute cocaine, methamphetamine, and fentanyl, as well as possession with intent to distribute cocaine, methamphetamine, and fentanyl, and possession of firearms in furtherance of drug trafficking crimes.

The investigation, which was led by the United States Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF), uncovered a massive stash of fentanyl pills, cocaine, and methamphetamine at Luizzi’s residence in Halfmoon and an apartment on Western Avenue in Albany.

On May 23, 2023, law enforcement searched Luizzi’s apartment in Halfmoon and found over 11 kilograms of fentanyl pills, five firearms, including a shotgun with a defaced serial number, and $2,616 in cash. The same day, they searched the apartment on Western Avenue and found 34 more firearms, over 400 grams of fentanyl pills, over 7,000 grams of pills containing methamphetamine, and over 700 grams of cocaine.

In addition to his prison sentence, Luizzi was ordered to pay a $10,000 fine and serve a 5-year term of supervised release following his release from prison.

Luizzi’s case is part of a larger investigation into a firearms trafficking conspiracy that has resulted in charges against several individuals, including Brandon Bartley, who was sentenced to 180 months in prison and Devon Newsome, who is scheduled to be sentenced in January 2025.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Alexander Wentworth-Ping, and the investigation was conducted by the DEA, ATF, Saratoga County Sheriff’s Office, United States Postal Inspection Service, U.S. Department of Labor, Office of Inspector General, and Henry County Police Department in Georgia.

Luizzi’s sentencing is a significant blow to the state’s efforts to combat the opioid epidemic, which has been fueled by the widespread availability of fentanyl and other synthetic opioids.
