A Harrison County man has been caught with a loaded weapon, despite being prohibited from owning a firearm due to a prior conviction.
Anthony R. Riley, II, 25, of Shinnston, West Virginia, pleaded guilty to one count of Unlawful Possession of a Firearm in federal court on February 2021. The charge stems from Riley’s possession of a 9mm pistol in Harrison County.
Riley’s guilty plea comes after a thorough investigation by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Shinnston Police Department.
Under the Federal Sentencing Guidelines, Riley faces up to 10 years of incarceration and a fine of up to $250,000. The actual sentence imposed will be based on the seriousness of the offenses and Riley’s prior criminal history, if any.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Christopher L. Bauer is prosecuting the case on behalf of the government. U.S. Magistrate Judge Michael Aloi presided over the proceedings.
Riley’s admission to the firearm charge marks a significant blow to his freedom, as he is now faced with the possibility of serving time in prison. The severity of the sentence will ultimately depend on the court’s evaluation of the case.
The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of adhering to firearms laws and regulations in the state of West Virginia.
