Antigo Man Charged in Cocaine, Marijuana Ring
A 35-year-old Antigo man is facing up to 40 years in prison after being charged with conspiracy to distribute cocaine and marijuana.
John M. Hunter, of Antigo, Wisconsin, was indicted by a federal grand jury on November 19, 2013, for his alleged role in a $5 million cocaine and marijuana trafficking ring. According to the indictment, Hunter conspired with others to distribute and possess with the intent to distribute over 500 grams of cocaine and over 50 kilograms of marijuana between May 2009 and August 2011.
The indictment, which was announced by James L. Santelle, United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Wisconsin, charges Hunter with a single count of Conspiracy to Distribute Controlled Substances in violation of 21 U.S.C. Sections 846 and 841(b)(1)(B), and 18 U.S.C. Section 2.
The investigation was led by the Langlade County Sheriff’s Office and the Marathon County Sheriff’s Office, with the case being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Daniel R. Humble.
Hunter is scheduled to appear in United States District Court in Green Bay, Wisconsin, on December 11, 2013, for arraignment.
It is worth noting that an indictment is only a charge and not evidence of guilt. Hunter is presumed innocent and is entitled to a fair trial at which the government must prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
If convicted, Hunter faces between five and 40 years’ imprisonment, up to a $5 million fine, and four years to life of Supervised Release.
The investigation into Hunter’s alleged activities is ongoing, and it is unclear what other individuals may be involved in the conspiracy.
The indictment and subsequent charges are a stark reminder of the ongoing threat posed by organized crime and narcotics trafficking in the region.
