Antonio Ortiz, Felon with Firearm, Hammond IN, 2023

HAMMOND, IN – Antonio Joel Ortiz, 25, is headed to federal prison for 18 months after admitting to illegally possessing a loaded firearm while committing a theft. Chief Judge Jon E. DeGuilio of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Indiana handed down the sentence Wednesday, adding a year of supervised release to the term.

The case unfolded August 1, 2022, when Ortiz was caught with the weapon during a theft. When police approached, Ortiz tossed the loaded firearm over a gate in a desperate attempt to ditch the evidence. Officers recovered both the gun and its loaded magazine.

Ortiz wasn’t just holding an illegal weapon; he was legally prohibited from having one at all. Court documents reveal a prior criminal history including felony convictions for criminal recklessness and burglary, disqualifying him from firearm ownership under federal law. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) led the investigation, working alongside the Hammond Police Department.

Special Assistant United States Attorney Patrick D. Grindlay prosecuted the case, securing the conviction and subsequent sentencing. The ATF’s Indiana High Intensity Drug Trafficking Task Force played a key role in building the case against Ortiz, demonstrating a coordinated effort to remove illegal firearms from the streets.

Federal officials are framing Ortiz’s sentencing as part of “Project Safe Neighborhoods” (PSN), a broader initiative aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence across the nation. The program emphasizes collaboration between law enforcement at all levels and community organizations, focusing on prevention, strategic enforcement, and measurable results. The Department of Justice launched a strengthened version of PSN in May 2021.

This case serves as a stark reminder of the consequences for convicted felons found in possession of firearms. The ATF continues to aggressively pursue these cases, working to keep dangerous weapons out of the hands of those legally barred from owning them. Ortiz will begin serving his 18-month sentence immediately.
