Portland Man Charged with Attempting to Bribe ICE Deportation Officer
A Portland man has been indicted on charges of attempting to bribe a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) deportation officer.
Antonio Oswaldo Burgos, 48, made an initial appearance today in federal court before U.S. Magistrate Judge Paul Papak.
The court unsealed a three-count indictment alleging Burgos, on three separate occasions, attempted to bribe the officer in order to facilitate the deportation of his estranged wife and daughter.
Burgos is accused of offering to pay the officer to expedite the deportation process, although the exact amounts offered were not disclosed. The indictment only alleges the attempts to bribe the officer, not that the officer was in fact bribed or that the deportations were carried out.
An indictment is only an accusation of a crime, and a defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
This case was jointly investigated by ICE’s Office of Professional Responsibility and Homeland Security Investigations.
A two-day jury trial is scheduled for August 28, 2018, before U.S. District Court Judge Michael H. Simon. Burgos was released pending trial.
At this time, it is unclear what motivated Burgos to attempt to bribe the officer or why he sought the deportation of his family members. However, the indictment provides a clear picture of the alleged attempts to subvert the law and the serious nature of the charges.
