Harrisburg Cop Charged in $ Theft
A Harrisburg police officer is facing serious charges after allegedly stealing thousands of dollars from an evidence locker. Corporal Sean Cornick, 44, is accused of taking the money during a drug investigation.
According to court documents, Cornick was videotaped removing cash from the locker, and an inventory later confirmed the money was missing. The Harrisburg Police Bureau launched an internal investigation, which was then referred to the FBI and Pennsylvania State Police.
Assistant United States Attorney Eric Pfisterer is prosecuting the case, which alleges Cornick stole money from a federal agency and removed property to prevent its seizure. Cornick appeared in court and was released on a $10,000 signature bond, with conditions including no contact with potential witnesses and surrendering his passport.
United States Attorney Bruce D. Brandler called the allegations ‘a sad day for law enforcement,’ emphasizing the importance of public trust. ‘Our office takes these matters very seriously and greatly appreciate the assistance and cooperation of the Harrisburg Police Department and Pennsylvania State Police in conducting this investigation,’ he said.
Special Agent Michael T. Harpster of the FBI’s Philadelphia Division echoed Brandler’s sentiments, stating that public corruption is a top priority for the agency. ‘When an officer who took an oath to protect and serve crosses the line, as alleged here, it’s an affront to all those in law enforcement who carry out their sworn duties with integrity.’
Major David E. Relph of the Pennsylvania State Police also expressed his disappointment, stating that the case highlights the importance of cooperation between agencies in maintaining public confidence in law enforcement.
Cornick faces up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine if convicted of removing property to prevent seizure. He could also face up to one year in prison for the theft of federal funds under $1,000.
