HEROIN TRAFFICKING IN THE BIG EASY: A New Orleans man has been sentenced in connection with a massive heroin trafficking operation.
U.S. Attorney Peter G. Strasser announced yesterday that Antwine Smith, age 42, of New Orleans, was sentenced to 78 months imprisonment and 5 years supervised release after pleading guilty to one count of conspiring to traffic one kilogram or more of heroin in the Eastern District of Louisiana.
A 23-count indictment was unsealed on July 25, 2014, charging Smith and 11 others in connection with a heroin trafficking operation in New Orleans East. According to court documents, this investigation targeted a heroin trafficking organization responsible for distributing at least 15 kilograms of heroin in New Orleans.
Agents seized approximately $1,200,000 in assets, including vehicles, currency, jewelry, and real property, from members of this drug trafficking organization. The assets were acquired with proceeds derived from the sale of heroin.
Smith was the last of the 12 defendants to plead guilty and receive his sentence. Co-defendants include Larry Hardy, who was sentenced to 90 months incarceration, and Ambrose Williams, who was sentenced to 120 months incarceration.
Other defendants sentenced in connection with the case include Antoinette Kelly, Christopher Francis, Rodney Mack, Thomas Harrison, Vincent P. Jones, Beth Marie Nguyen, Ricky Marquette Bozeman, Michael Sorina, and Terrell Carney.
U.S. Attorney Strasser praised the work of the Drug Enforcement Administration, Kenner Police Department, and Border Patrol in investigating this matter. Assistant United States Attorney Brandon Long is in charge of the prosecution.
