The grim tale of Brian Luke Williams, 20, from Arapahoe, Wyoming, took a darker turn as the defendant pleaded guilty to two counts of assault resulting in serious bodily injury. The charges stem from an incident that turned a celebration into a catastrophe.
On March 13, 2021, Williams was driving a truck with reckless abandon and under the influence of alcohol during a bonfire party on the Wind River Indian Reservation. His erratic behavior led to disaster as he lost control of the vehicle, sending partygoers into the flames at the scene.
The victims sustained severe burns from the encounter. One victim was transported to the emergency room by Williams himself, while another was rushed to hospital by a fellow attendee. The defendant later accompanied one to the Riverton, Wyoming, emergency room and made distressing phone calls to their families about the incident.
United States Attorney Bob Murray announced the plea today, with Chief United States District Judge Scott W. Skavdahl setting sentencing for February 9, 2022. Williams faces up to 10 years in prison for each count, along with a fine of $250,000 and supervised release for three years.
The investigation was led by the Bureau of Indian Affairs, with Assistant United States Attorney Timothy W. Gist prosecuting the case. Case number: 21-cr-00081-SWS
