ALEXANDRIA, LA – A massive haul of narcotics and the men responsible for moving it landed in federal prison this week. Archie Louis Carter, Jr., 40, of Alexandria, Louisiana, received a crushing 188 months (15 years, 8 months) in prison, followed by 3 years of supervised release, for his role in a multi-state drug operation. His accomplice, Isaiah Charles Jones, 34, of Houston, Texas, is already serving a 151-month (12 years, 7 months) sentence, with another 3 years on release, after pleading guilty in January.
The bust originated on February 15, 2020, when U.S. Marshals pulled over a vehicle traveling from Houston into Louisiana. A K-9 unit quickly flagged the presence of narcotics. A search revealed a staggering amount of illegal drugs: approximately 1,090 grams of heroin, 2,556 grams of cocaine, 1,030 grams of methamphetamine, and a whopping 12,223 dosage units of Ecstasy. Both Carter and Jones were taken into custody and later indicted. Carter pleaded guilty to possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine on September 19, 2022, while Jones admitted to possessing Ecstasy with the same intent on the same date.
“This wasn’t a small-time operation,” said a source within the ATF, speaking on condition of anonymity. “We’re talking about enough poison to devastate communities across the region. These sentences send a clear message: move this stuff, and you *will* face serious consequences.” The investigation was a joint effort involving the FBI, ATF, and the U.S. Marshal Service’s Violent Offender Task Force, with prosecution handled by Assistant U.S. Attorney Jamilla A. Bynog.
In a separate case, Travis Trentel Thorne, 39, of Crowley, Louisiana, was sentenced to 37 months in prison, also followed by 3 years of supervised release, by U.S. District Judge David C. Joseph. Thorne was caught on June 20, 2020, during a traffic stop by Acadia Parish Sheriff’s Deputies. They found 28.7 grams of heroin and a scale covered in residue. Thorne confessed to possessing the heroin with intent to distribute.
“The amount of heroin found on Thorne, while smaller than the Carter/Jones haul, is still significant,” said a law enforcement official familiar with the case. “Every gram of this stuff represents lives at risk.” Thorne pleaded guilty to possession with intent to distribute heroin on November 9, 2022. The case was investigated by the Department of Homeland Security, Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney John W. Nickel.
Both cases highlight the ongoing battle against drug trafficking in Louisiana and the dedication of federal agencies to dismantling these criminal networks. While these convictions offer a temporary reprieve, law enforcement officials warn that the flow of narcotics remains a constant threat, demanding continued vigilance and aggressive prosecution.
