In a shocking display of the dangers of human smuggling, two Mexican citizens have been sentenced to federal prison for their roles in the death of an illegal alien. Imer Ares-Chagolla, 36, and Ismael Rivera-Lopez, 19, pleaded guilty to human smuggling on April 1, 2019, following a tragic incident that resulted in the loss of life.
On July 17, 2018, a group of aliens who had illegally crossed the Rio Grande River from Mexico into the United States found themselves in distress. Authorities located the group and began emergency search operations in the area, only to find a female citizen of El Salvador unresponsive in the South Texas brush country near Sullivan City.
Despite efforts to provide emergency medical treatment, the woman ultimately died from multiple organ failures due to shock related to heat stroke. The temperature that day was a scorching 110 degrees in the brush, making the already treacherous terrain even more deadly.
Ares-Chagolla and Rivera-Lopez served as brush guides for the group, leading them through the hazardous terrain. However, their actions ultimately resulted in tragedy. U.S. District Judge Ricardo Hinojosa ordered Ares-Chagolla to 87 months in prison, while Rivera-Lopez was sentenced to 46 months, with the court finding him to be a minor participant in the event.
The investigation into the incident was spearheaded by Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations, with the assistance of Border Patrol and Sullivan City Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Robert L. Guerra Jr. prosecuted the case, which was announced by U.S. Attorney Ryan K. Patrick.
The sentencing of Ares-Chagolla and Rivera-Lopez serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of human smuggling and the devastating consequences it can have.
