PHOENIX, AZ – The United States Attorney’s Office for the District of Arizona released its July 2020 Immigration and Border Crimes Report, revealing a surge in illegal reentry cases following deportation. Of the 157 individuals charged with illegal reentry, 135 had prior non-immigration convictions, including violent crimes such as homicide, sex offenses, domestic violence, property crimes, DUIs, and drug crimes. Notably, 81 of these defendants had been deported three or more times.
In parallel, the report cited a spike in alien smuggling cases with 28 individuals charged. Meanwhile, the Criminal Consequence Initiative (CCI) saw no charges for illegal entry this month, a stark contrast to previous trends. These figures reflect prosecutions solely by the U.S. Attorney’s Office, excluding those apprehended by immigration enforcement officials and processed administratively.
The Department of Homeland Security’s policy change in March, expediting the return of aliens entering the U.S. illegally without detention, may have contributed to the decline in presented cases. This shift in strategy coincides with other COVID-19 related border restrictions that have reshaped immigration enforcement priorities.
Criminal convictions are based on preliminary reports provided by the arresting agency. The report stresses these numbers only represent prosecutions by the U.S. Attorney’s Office, not encompassing individuals processed through administrative channels.
