Andrew Vesely, Car Theft, Illinois 2022

⏱ 2 min read

On January 31, 2022, Andrew Vesely, a suburban Chicago man, attempted to flee from law enforcement in Posen, Illinois, when they tried to arrest him for outstanding felony warrants and suspected car theft. Vesely, who had two outstanding felony arrest warrants, jumped into a stolen Jeep and struggled with a DEA agent, injuring him in the process. The agent had reached into the vehicle to stop Vesely from fleeing, but was flung into garbage cans as Vesely sped off.

Vesely led officers on a high-speed chase through Markham, reaching speeds of over 100 miles per hour before crashing the Jeep into an embankment. He was captured while trying to run away. A backpack left behind in the alley contained a loaded semiautomatic handgun with armor-piercing rounds, a car-key programming device, and other tools for stealing cars.

The arrest and subsequent search of Vesely’s residence were the result of a joint effort by the DEA, Homeland Security Investigations, and local law enforcement. Vesely’s actions not only put the lives of law enforcement agents at risk but also demonstrated a disregard for public safety.

Vesely has been sentenced to more than four years in federal prison for illegally possessing firearms and injuring a law enforcement agent. The sentence reflects the seriousness of Vesely’s crimes and the need to protect the community from armed fugitives.
