Armed Robber Sentenced to 104 Months in Prison

In a shocking turn of events, Geoff Billips, 36, of Bluff City, Tenn., was sentenced to serve 104 months in prison for his involvement in a brazen armed robbery.

According to court records, on August 28, 2013, the Honorable J. Ronnie Greer, U.S. District Judge, handed down the sentence to Billips, who will be subject to probation under the supervision of the U.S. Probation Office for five years upon his release from prison.

The armed robbery in question took place at the Check Into Cash business on Volunteer Parkway in Bristol, Tenn. Billips pleaded guilty in April 2013 to the crime and to brandishing a firearm in furtherance of the robbery.

Under federal law, Billips faced a minimum 84-month sentence for the firearm charge alone, but the judge decided to impose a harsher sentence due to the severity of the crime.

The joint investigation that led to Billips’ conviction involved the Bristol Police Department, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). Assistant U.S. Attorney J. Gregory Bowman represented the United States in the case.

As part of the Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) initiative, this case aimed to crack down on gun crime and provide local communities with the resources they need to combat violent offenders. The PSN program gives federal districts the flexibility to focus on individual challenges and provide more options to prosecutors.

Billips’ sentence serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of committing armed robbery and the importance of law enforcement agencies working together to keep communities safe.
