Philadelphia Man Sentenced to 35 Years for Armed Robbery Spree
In a shocking display of violence, Koren Jones a/k/a “Kuron Jones,” 25, of Philadelphia, has been sentenced to 35 years’ imprisonment, followed by 5 years of supervised release, for his role in a two-day armed robbery spree in November 2016.
The crime spree began when Jones, wearing a ski mask, entered a local grocery store and pointed a gun directly at the cashier, threatening to shoot her. He eventually shot a customer in both legs, causing severe injuries, and made off with $200 from the cashier.
The next day, Jones committed a second armed robbery at a different local grocery store, firing a gun directly at the cashier and narrowly missing him. The cashier gave Jones approximately $250 before he fled from the store. Later that same day, Jones attempted to commit an armed robbery of a deli, but the cashier wrestled the gun away from him, causing it to accidentally discharge.
U.S. Attorney William M. McSwain expressed outrage over the senseless violence Jones committed, stating, “No one should have to live in fear like that. By seeking and obtaining a significant prison sentence in this case, we have made the neighborhoods Jones terrorized safer today than yesterday.”
FBI Special Agent in Charge Michael T. Harpster added, “In a two-day stretch of violence, Koren Jones targeted three places of business and terrorized numerous people. He showed zero regard for human life—opening fire on frightened witnesses, leaving both physical and emotional scars.”
The case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods, a program aimed at reducing violent crime and making neighborhoods safer for everyone. It was investigated by the FBI and the Philadelphia Police Department, and prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Katherine Driscoll.
The 35-year sentence is a significant blow to Jones, who had pleaded guilty to committing two armed robberies, one attempted armed robbery, and related firearms offenses. The sentence is a testament to the hard work of law enforcement and prosecutors in bringing a violent offender to justice.
As part of the sentence, Jones will serve 35 years in prison, followed by 5 years of supervised release. The sentence will likely bring some measure of peace to the victims of Jones’ violent crime spree, who were left shaken by his actions.
The case highlights the importance of community involvement in reducing violent crime. By working together, law enforcement and the community can make neighborhoods safer and prevent senseless acts of violence like those committed by Jones.
