Matthew Onesimo Armstrong, a member of the Seminole Nation of Oklahoma and the Indian Brotherhood (IBH), pleaded guilty today for two separate homicides that shook Indian Country in Oklahoma. The 32-year-old was charged in connection with the 2015 murder of Scotty Candler and the 2017 murder of Nicole Owl.
In May 2015, Armstrong went to Candler’s home under orders from IBH, where a confrontation ended in Candler’s death. Armstrong and fellow gang member John Douglas Knight are implicated in the incident. Armstrong also stands accused of smuggling methamphetamine into prisons and jails for IBH, leading to his involvement in Owl’s murder in April 2017.
Armstrong faces life imprisonment for his crimes, having pleaded guilty to assault with a dangerous weapon, murder in Indian Country, kidnapping, and possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine. His sentencing is pending before a federal district court judge.
John Douglas Knight awaits trial on charges of murder in Indian country and carrying and discharging a firearm during a crime of violence. Armstrong’s accomplice, Nicholas Earl Faulkner, pleaded guilty to kidnapping and being a felon in possession of a firearm, with his sentencing still to be scheduled.
The cases are being investigated by the FBI and the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation. Assistant Attorney General Kenneth A. Polite Jr. and Acting U.S. Attorney Christopher J. Wilson announced the charges. Trial Attorneys Rami Badawy and Brian Morgan are handling the prosecution for the respective cases.
