Crystel Lee Riedling, Disability Benefits Theft, Florida 2024

Crystel Lee Riedling, a 44-year-old Army veteran from Lake City, Florida, was found guilty by a federal jury on charges of stealing nearly $300,000 in disability benefits and making a false statement to the U.S. government. The verdict, delivered in Jacksonville, marks the end of a high-profile federal case built on medical deception and outright lies about her physical condition.

Riedling began collecting Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) disability payments after claiming she had completely lost the use of her right arm. Over the span of five to six years, she pocketed $299,000 in taxpayer-funded benefits. But prosecutors laid out a damning case: multiple witnesses saw her using her right arm in daily activities, from lifting objects to driving, while surveillance and medical evaluations contradicted her claims.

Two doctors testified during the trial that Riedling was malingering — intentionally exaggerating or fabricating her injuries to receive benefits. Medical records and video evidence showed no credible basis for her claimed paralysis. One physician described her presentation as inconsistent with known neurological conditions, calling her symptoms medically unexplained and likely feigned.

Even more damning, Riedling admitted to federal investigators that accepting the money was ‘completely wrong.’ Despite this, she continued to file claims asserting she was totally and permanently disabled. That false statement charge stems from her direct denial of any functional use of her right arm during a formal interview with a VA investigator.

The case was jointly investigated by the Department of Veterans Affairs – Office of Inspector General, the Social Security Administration – Office of the Inspector General, and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services – Office of Inspector General. The collaboration highlights the federal government’s tightening scrutiny on benefit abuse across multiple agencies.

Riedling, indicted on February 18, 2016, now faces up to 15 years in federal prison. Her sentencing is scheduled for April 11, 2017. Assistant United States Attorney Jason Mehta prosecuted the case, calling it a betrayal of public trust and a theft from programs meant for truly disabled veterans. ‘She lied from the start,’ Mehta said. ‘And she lived off the system while real veterans suffer.’
