Counterfeit Currency Scam Exposed in Scranton

SCRANTON, PA – A pair of New York individuals have been charged with passing counterfeit U.S. currency, leaving a trail of financial woes in their wake. Courtney Murray, age 22, of Slingerlands, New York, and Rashaun Ferguson, age 26, of Flushing, New York, were taken into custody after an indictment was unsealed.

According to the indictment, Murray and Ferguson conspired to pass counterfeit currency between September 2019 and April 2020. During this time, they allegedly passed approximately $14,000 in counterfeited Federal Reserve Notes in the denominations of $20 in Luzerne and York Counties, New Jersey, New York, and Maryland.

The case was investigated by the United States Secret Service and various state and local police departments. Assistant U.S. Attorney Phillip J. Caraballo is prosecuting the case.

The indictment alleges that Murray and Ferguson violated federal law by passing counterfeit currency. Specifically, they are charged with conspiracy to pass counterfeit currency and multiple counts of passing counterfeit currency.

The maximum penalty under federal law for the most serious offenses is 20 years of imprisonment, a term of supervised release following imprisonment, and a fine. However, the actual sentence will depend on various factors, including the nature and seriousness of the offense, the defendant’s history and characteristics, and the need to punish the defendant, protect the public, and provide for the defendant’s educational, vocational, and medical needs.
