Army Vet Stole $11,693 from US Army
LEROY DANIELS, JR., a former United States Army reservist, was sentenced to 30 months of probation, 100 hours of community service, and a $100 mandatory special assessment fee after pleading guilty to conspiracy to commit theft of federal funds.
According to court records, DANIELS stole $11,693.87 from the United States Department of the Army by claiming reimbursement for the performance of military funeral honors ceremonies that never occurred.
The National Defense Authorization Act of 2000 authorizes military funeral honors (MFH) for active-duty soldiers, retirees, and veterans. At a family’s request, eligible persons can receive military funeral honors, including the folding and presenting of the United States flag and the playing of “Taps.”
Chief United States District Judge Nannette Jolivette Brown ordered DANIELS to pay $11,693.87 in restitution to the United States Department of the Army, pursuant to the Mandatory Victim Restitution Act.
U.S. Attorney Duane A. Evans praised the work of the United States Army Criminal Investigation Command. Assistant United States Attorney Andre J. Lagarde of the Public Integrity Unit is in charge of the prosecution.
The case highlights the importance of accountability in the use of government funds. “Theft of government funds is a serious offense that undermines the trust placed in our government,” said U.S. Attorney Evans. “We will continue to work tirelessly to hold individuals accountable for such crimes.”
The sentencing marks the end of a long investigation into DANIELS’ activities. The case serves as a reminder that the Department of Justice will aggressively pursue those who misuse government funds.
Former Army reservist LEROY DANIELS, JR. has been held accountable for their actions, and it is only fitting that they face the consequences of their crime.
