Failure to Register as a Sex Offender Lands Norris Man 15 Months in Custody

US Attorney Randolph J. Seiler announced the sentencing of Arnold Eagle Bear, Jr., 34, for failing to register as a sex offender in South Dakota.

Eagle Bear was sentenced to 15 months in custody by U.S. District Judge Roberto A. Lange on May 15, 2017. He will also serve 5 years of supervised release and pay a special assessment of $100 to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.

The case began when Eagle Bear was indicted by a federal grand jury on August 16, 2016. He pled guilty on March 13, 2017. Eagle Bear was initially released from custody on June 10, 2016, and began supervised release after being convicted of Sexual Abuse of a Minor in September 2014.

As a result of his conviction, Eagle Bear is required to register as a sex offender. However, he initially registered but then absconded from supervision and failed to update his registration.

The U.S. Marshals Service investigated the case. Assistant U.S. Attorney Kirk Albertson handled the prosecution.

Eagle Bear was immediately turned over to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service following his sentencing.

The case serves as a reminder of the importance of sex offender registration and the consequences of failing to comply.
