Waterloo Woman Sentenced to Federal Prison for Buying Gun for Boyfriend
A 24-year-old Waterloo woman was sentenced to one year in federal prison for buying a gun for her boyfriend, who was 17 at the time.
Arryel Skye Waters, 24, of Waterloo, Iowa, received the prison sentence after a guilty plea to one count of false statement during purchase of a firearm. The sentence was handed down by Chief United States District Court Judge C.J. Williams in Cedar Rapids.
The incident occurred in July 2023, when Waters attempted to purchase a gun from a business in Cedar Falls, Iowa. Employees at the store denied the purchase after they suspected Waters was not being truthful about who she was buying the gun for. Undeterred, Waters left the business and traveled to another store in Cedar Falls, where she purchased a Glock firearm while claiming she was buying it for herself.
Waters’ boyfriend, who was also a marijuana user at the time, later used the gun to confront employees at one of the businesses Waters delivered to. The boyfriend was arrested and charged with multiple counts, including felon in possession of a firearm, due to his prior felony conviction for burglary.
Waters was also found to have purchased the gun for her boyfriend despite knowing he was prohibited from possessing firearms. The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Ashley L. Corkery and investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Firearms, Tobacco, and Explosives, the Cedar Falls Police Department, and the Waterloo Police Department.
As part of her sentence, Waters will serve a three-year term of supervised release after her prison term. She was also ordered to pay a $100 special assessment fee. The case file number is 24-CR-2043.
The case serves as a reminder of the importance of following federal laws and regulations regarding the purchase and possession of firearms.
