PORTLAND, Ore.—The grim reaper of flames, Trenten Edward Barker, 34, made his first appearance in federal court Monday, charged with the heinous crime of arson against federal property. The alleged fireballer is staring down a potential life sentence for torching government property near an ICE office in South Portland.
Barker’s fiery escapade on June 11, 2025, saw him lighting up a pile of materials stacked against the vehicle gate of the ICE building with a flare from his backpack. The flames were swiftly extinguished by federal officers, but not before causing a stir. Barker faces up to 20 years in federal prison for the felony offense.
Joining Barker in court were three other defendants: Nadya Malinowska, 33, charged with failing to obey lawful orders; David Pearl, 35, who stands accused of creating a disturbance and also failing to obey an order; and August Dean Gordon, 31, who’s facing charges of willful depredation of government property and assaulting a federal officer. Gordon was caught red-handed on June 29, 2025, pulling a proximity card reader from the ICE facility’s driveway and resisting arrest by kicking officers.
The court heard how Malinowska defied orders to disperse the crowd on two separate occasions, while Pearl tried to meddle with officers during an arrest. All four defendants faced charges before a U.S. Magistrate Judge, released pending future proceedings. Their penalties could range from 30 days in prison to decades behind bars.
The investigation was conducted by the FBI, Federal Protective Service, and ATF, with the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Oregon prosecuting. The case serves as a stark reminder that lawlessness near government buildings will not be tolerated.
A criminal complaint and an information are only accusations of a crime, and a defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
