SCANTON – The gritty streets of West Nanticoke, Pennsylvania, witnessed the downfall of Daniyel Jamal Heyward, 45, as he faced a federal grand jury’s charge for drug trafficking. According to Acting United States Attorney John C. Gurganus, Heyward stands accused of possession with intent to distribute cocaine on February 13, 2025, and conspiracy to possess said substance between January 1, 2025, and that date.
The Luzerne County Drug Task Force and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) worked tirelessly to bring Heyward’s illegal activities to light. Assistant U.S. Attorney Luisa Honora Berti is now leading the prosecution against this drug kingpin.
This case is a part of Operation Take Back America, a Department of Justice-led initiative aimed at dismantling cartels, transnational criminal organizations, and violent crime syndicates. It leverages resources from OCDETFs and Project Safe Neighborhood to protect communities across the nation.
Under federal law, if Heyward is found guilty, he faces up to 40 years in prison, followed by supervised release and a substantial fine. Sentencing will be determined by a judge after reviewing federal sentencing statutes and guidelines.
