Arson, Burglary Charges Filed Against Lewis Brown

A 21-year-old Fort Thompson man has been charged with arson and burglary after allegedly setting fire to a duplex and breaking into an occupied structure.

Lewis Brown, Jr., 21, was indicted by a federal grand jury on December 9, 2014, for his role in the crimes, which allegedly occurred on or about October 15, 2014.

Brown appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Mark A. Moreno on December 18, 2014, and pled not guilty to the indictment. If convicted, he faces up to life in custody and/or a $250,000 fine, 5 years of supervised release, and $200 to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.

The investigation into the crimes is being conducted by the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Crow Creek Agency. Assistant U.S. Attorney Troy R. Morley is prosecuting the case.

Brown was released on bond pending trial. A trial date has not been set.

The charges against Brown are merely accusations, and he is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty. Restitution may also be ordered in the case.

‘The maximum penalty upon conviction is up to life in custody and/or a $250,000 fine, 5 years of supervised release, and $200 to the Federal Crime Victims Fund,’ according to the indictment.
