ADA, OKLAHOMA – Shyla Faye Pittman, a 38-year-old Pontotoc County resident, has been sentenced to 14 months in prison for arson in Indian Country.
The United States Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Oklahoma announced the sentencing of Pittman, who was found guilty of setting a house fire in Ada, Oklahoma. The crime occurred within the boundaries of the Chickasaw Nation Reservation.
According to investigators, law enforcement responded to a call about a house fire on March 11, 2023, and arrived to find Pittman on the porch of the burning building with a butane torch nearby. Firefighters extinguished the blaze, and ATF Fire Investigators discovered multiple points of origin for the fire, indicating that Pittman had intentionally set fires throughout the home.
The investigation was a joint effort between the Pontotoc County Sheriff’s Office, the Chickasaw Nation Lighthorse Police, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Pittman pleaded guilty to one count of Arson in Indian Country on October 16, 2023.
The Honorable Ronald A. White, Chief Judge in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Oklahoma, presided over the hearing. Pittman will remain in custody of the U.S. Marshal pending transportation to a designated United States Bureau of Prisons facility to serve her sentence.
Assistant United States Attorney Kevin Gross represented the United States in the case. Pittman’s sentence is a non-paroleable 14 months imprisonment and three years of supervised release. The sentence reflects the severity of the crime and the danger it posed to the community.
The case serves as a reminder of the importance of cooperation between law enforcement agencies in Indian Country. The joint effort between the Pontotoc County Sheriff’s Office, the Chickasaw Nation Lighthorse Police, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives was crucial in bringing Pittman to justice.
