Ashonti Hall, Gun in Furtherance of Drug Dealing, Louisiana 2021

Ashonti Hall, 31, of New Orleans, Louisiana, has been sentenced to 60 months in the Bureau of Prisons for possessing a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime. The sentencing occurred on August 5, 2021, in the United States District Court.

The charges against Ashonti Hall stem from an investigation into a shooting that occurred the previous day. New Orleans Police Department officers apprehended Hall after a pursuit, and a search of his person revealed a backpack containing heroin, cocaine base, cocaine, and marijuana with the intent to distribute, as well as a loaded gun.

Ashonti Hall was initially indicted in October 2019 on charges of possessing heroin, cocaine base, cocaine, and marijuana with the intent to distribute, being a felon in possession of a firearm, and possessing a firearm in furtherance of drug trafficking in violation of Title 18, United States Code, Section 924(c).

According to the court documents, Ashonti Hall admitted to fleeing from the New Orleans Police Department after the shooting. The officers eventually caught up with him and found the aforementioned contraband and firearm.

U.S. Attorney Duane A. Evans praised the work of the New Orleans Police Department, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, and the Drug Enforcement Administration in investigating this matter. The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney David Haller.

Ashonti Hall was sentenced to the mandatory minimum term of 5 years imprisonment to be followed by three years of supervised release. He was also ordered to pay a mandatory $100 special assessment fee.
