McLAUGHLIN, SOUTH DAKOTA – A South Dakota man has been sentenced for his role in a violent assault.
Deon Fast Horse, age 27, of Little Eagle, South Dakota, was sentenced to 180 days in federal prison, followed by one year of supervised release, and a special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund in the amount of $25.
The conviction stemmed from an incident that occurred on May 27, 2020, in McLaughlin, South Dakota, where Fast Horse assaulted his dating partner. Fast Horse was indicted by a federal grand jury on September 9, 2020, and he pled guilty on November 2, 2020.
This case was investigated by the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe Bureau of Indian Affairs. Assistant U.S. Attorney Meghan N. Dilges prosecuted the case.
U.S. Magistrate Judge William D. Gerdes sentenced Fast Horse on March 16, 2021. Following the sentencing, Fast Horse was immediately remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service.
Acting United States Attorney Dennis Holmes announced the sentencing. The incident that led to the conviction highlights the ongoing issue of domestic violence in our communities.
The U.S. Marshals Service will be responsible for Fast Horse’s incarceration and supervision. The case serves as a reminder that those who commit violent crimes will be held accountable for their actions.
