The streets of Fort Yates, North Dakota, have seen their fair share of violence, but one recent case has taken a particularly disturbing turn. Calvin Killspotted, a/k/a Sonesakda Killspotted, age 39, has been indicted on multiple assault charges, leaving a trail of destruction in his wake.
The indictment, which was handed down on August 10, 2021, alleges that Killspotted unlawfully assaulted an intimate partner on two separate occasions in Corson County. The abuse resulted in serious bodily injury, and the accused is also charged with assault by strangulation and domestic assault by an habitual offender.
The maximum penalty for conviction is a whopping 10 years in federal prison, accompanied by a $250,000 fine, three years of supervised release, and a $100 contribution to the Federal Crime Victims Fund. Restitution may also be ordered, further emphasizing the severity of the charges.
The investigation into Killspotted’s actions was a collaborative effort between the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Office of Justices Services, the Corson County Sheriff’s Office, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Assistant U.S. Attorney Cameron J. Cook is prosecuting the case, and a trial date has yet to be set.
Killspotted appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Mark A. Moreno on September 7, 2021, and pleaded not guilty to the indictment. He was subsequently remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service pending trial.
The charges against Killspotted are merely accusations, and he is presumed innocent until proven guilty. However, the severity of the allegations and the number of charges against him suggest a disturbing pattern of behavior.
