WORCESTER, MA – Arthur Cummings, 49, of Athol, Massachusetts, has confessed to a depraved act: possessing child pornography. Cummings pleaded guilty today in federal court, bringing him one step closer to facing justice for the exploitation of innocent children.
The guilty plea was entered before U.S. District Court Judge Timothy S. Hillman, who set a sentencing date for July 11, 2017. The case stems from a federal investigation targeting individuals who use anonymizing software on the “dark web” to traffic in horrific material. Agents weren’t looking for simple possession; they were dismantling a network of predators.
On March 10, 2016, federal agents raided Cummings’ Athol residence, acting on evidence gathered during the dark web investigation. A forensic analysis of a laptop seized from the home revealed a sickening trove of illegal content: more than 10 videos and over 100 images depicting the abuse of children. The sheer volume indicates a sustained and deliberate pattern of behavior.
Cummings now faces a potential sentence of up to 20 years behind bars. Beyond imprisonment, he could receive a minimum of five years, and potentially a lifetime, of supervised release. A fine of up to $250,000 could also be levied. However, the final sentence will be determined by Judge Hillman, taking into account the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other relevant statutory factors.
