New York — In a stunning victory for justice, New York Attorney General Letitia James has secured a significant win for hundreds of former St. Clare’s Hospital workers. The court has denied the Roman Catholic Diocese of Albany’s bid to dismiss claims that the diocese violated its financial obligations, effectively stripping over 1,100 employees of their life savings.
James filed a lawsuit against the Diocese, its leadership, and the St. Clare’s Corporation in May 2022 for their deliberate actions leading to the termination of the pension plan. The court’s decision today allows the case to proceed, ensuring that these dedicated workers are one step closer to reclaiming what is theirs.
“Hundreds of former St. Clare’s employees – nurses, social workers, lab technicians, and support staff – devoted their lives to caring for others,” stated Attorney General James in a press release. “But when the Diocese-controlled board terminated their pension plan, many lost their life savings and retirement security. Today’s victory brings us closer to rectifying this injustice.”
The court granted a motion for summary judgment, finding that St. Clare’s breached its contract with employees by failing to pay their pensions. The judge also denied all motions seeking to dismiss the lawsuit, paving the way for a jury trial. This decision underscores the AG’s commitment to holding wrongdoers accountable and ensuring pensioners receive their due.
“The hardworking pensioners of St. Clare’s have been through enough,” James continued. “This case is about giving them hope and restoring their dignity. We will not rest until justice is served.”
This victory sends a strong message that the rights of workers, especially those in the healthcare industry, will be protected. As the trial progresses, the public will have a clearer understanding of the Diocese’s actions and the impact on these loyal employees.
