Austan Kinnaird, 26, of Goddard, Kan., has been sentenced to 41 months in federal prison for his role in two commercial robberies in Wichita.
The sentence, handed down on Wednesday, comes after Kinnaird pleaded guilty to two counts of robbery. According to his plea, Kinnaird admitted to robbing Golf Headquarters at 848 N. Webb Road in Wichita on Dec. 24, 2015. He entered the store wearing a wig and a cap, and showed the clerk what appeared to be a firearm before demanding money and fleeing the scene with stolen cash.
In his plea, Kinnaird also admitted to robbing a branch of Intrust Bank located inside a Dillons grocery store at 9450 E. Harry in Wichita on April 29, 2016. During this robbery, Kinnaird gave the teller a note demanding money, and then fled the bank with the cash. He was later identified after surveillance photos were made public.
The investigation into Kinnaird’s crimes was led by the FBI and the Wichita Police Department, with assistance from Assistant U.S. Attorney Jason Hart. U.S. Attorney Tom Beall commended the efforts of these agencies and individuals in bringing Kinnaird to justice.
Kinnaird’s sentence of 41 months in federal prison reflects the seriousness of his crimes. The use of a firearm, or in this case, an object that appeared to be a firearm, is a significant aggravating factor in robbery cases. The fact that Kinnaird targeted two separate businesses, putting the lives of multiple individuals at risk, also contributed to the severity of his sentence.
The case against Kinnaird serves as a reminder of the importance of cooperation between law enforcement agencies and the community in preventing and investigating crimes. The swift identification and apprehension of Kinnaird were made possible by the public’s response to the release of surveillance photos, highlighting the critical role that citizens can play in helping to keep their communities safe.
As Kinnaird begins his sentence, the community can take comfort in knowing that justice has been served. The sentence handed down in this case demonstrates that those who engage in violent and destructive behavior will be held accountable for their actions. The people of Wichita can feel safer knowing that law enforcement agencies are working tirelessly to protect them and their businesses from individuals like Austan Kinnaird.
