ERMA, NJ – Avery Dowe, 24, of Erma, New Jersey, is behind bars after a raid uncovered a sickening cache of child sexual abuse materials (CSAM) on his devices. The arrest, announced jointly by the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office and Lower Township Police, is the latest blow in the ongoing war against online predators.
The investigation began with a Cyber-Tip reported to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC), flagging Dowe as a user downloading and sharing disturbing content. Authorities quickly zeroed in, leading to a court-authorized search of his residence on December 17, 2024. The operation was a coordinated effort involving the Cape May County Regional SWAT Team, the Cape May and Gloucester County Prosecutor’s Offices, the Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force, Lower Township Police, and, notably, the U.S. Secret Service – Atlantic City field office.
During the search, investigators seized a computer and multiple cellular devices. Forensic analysis confirmed the worst: the devices contained images and videos depicting the sexual abuse of children. “The Secret Service is committed to bringing its cyber and forensic investigative resources to bear in support of crimes against children,” stated Special Agent in Charge Glenn Dennis. “This case highlights the value of broad collaboration across all aspects of law enforcement.” The statement rings hollow to some, considering the agency’s primary mission, but it’s a necessary acknowledgement of the growing digital battlefield.
Dowe was arrested on December 19, 2024, and charged with Possession of Child Sexual Abuse Materials, a third-degree crime in New Jersey. If convicted, he faces a potential sentence of three to five years in New Jersey State Prison. He is currently held at the Cape May County Correctional Facility, awaiting court proceedings. The grim reality is that even a five-year sentence feels inadequate for the damage inflicted on the victims depicted in the CSAM.
Cape May County Prosecutor Jeffrey H. Sutherland emphasized that this case is part of a larger, relentless effort by his High-Tech Crimes Unit and the ICAC Task Force, working alongside the New Jersey State Police ICAC Task Force, to identify and prosecute those who exploit children and distribute this vile material. Sutherland urged citizens to report any suspected child exploitation or criminal activity to the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office at 609-465-1135 or anonymously through the office’s website: www.cmcpros.net/tips.
Disclaimer: It’s crucial to remember that these are merely accusations, and Avery Dowe is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. However, the evidence uncovered paints a disturbing picture, and the investigation continues to ensure justice for the victims whose lives have been irrevocably damaged. Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and report on the proceedings.
