Matthew Henry Jacober, Felon in Possession of Explosives, Virginia 2008

Today’s grim headlines from the federal courts of California bring us a chilling tale of lawlessness. Matthew Henry Jacober, 43, a resident of Bakersfield, has been indicted on four counts by a federal grand jury for his brazen actions. Jacober is accused of being a felon in possession of explosives and ammunition, as well as manufacturing methamphetamine.

The charges against Jacober are nothing short of explosive. According to court documents, the defendant was found with 50 pounds of dynamite and 25 rounds of shotgun shells improperly stored. But that’s not all; law enforcement officials uncovered a crystal methamphetamine lab in his remote Bakersfield residence.

Jacober’s previous conviction for making a destructive device without a permit has left him under the watchful eye of the law, yet he found ways to defy it again. As a convicted felon, Jacober was explicitly prohibited from possessing explosives and ammunition.

The relentless pursuit of justice in this case was a collaborative effort by various federal agencies. The Federal Bureau of Investigation led the investigation with support from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the Kern County Sheriff’s Bomb Squad, and the Kern County Fire Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Karen Escobar is now tasked with prosecuting the case.

In the event Jacober is convicted of manufacturing methamphetamine, he faces a mandatory minimum of five years and a maximum of 40 years in federal prison, along with a fine of $5 million. Should he be found guilty of being a felon in possession of explosives or ammunition, his sentence could range from ten to fifteen years respectively, accompanied by a $250,000 fine. However, any final sentencing would rest solely within the discretion of the court.

This case is part of Operation Take Back America, an initiative that mobilizes all the resources of the Department of Justice to combat illegal immigration, eliminate cartels and transnational criminal organizations, and safeguard communities from violent crime. Jacober’s actions are a stark reminder of the ongoing battle against organized crime and drug trafficking.
