Alejandro Galvan-Silvestre, a 26-year-old resident of Bakersfield, California, has pleaded guilty to aiming a laser pointer at a Kern County Sheriff’s Office helicopter, Air One. The incident, which occurred on September 5, 2021, drew national attention for its audacity amidst a year record high in laser strikes against aircraft.
According to court documents, Galvan-Silvestre was observed drinking with his family and friends outside his residence when he directed the beam of a laser pointer towards the Sheriff’s helicopter, which was conducting routine patrols. The brazen act occurred while authorities were on duty, posing a significant risk to both personnel and the public.
Galvan-Silvestre is currently facing a maximum statutory penalty of five years in prison and a $250,000 fine for his actions. Sentencing has been scheduled for November 17, 2025, with the actual sentence to be determined by the court after considering applicable statutory factors and Federal Sentencing Guidelines.
