BALTIMORE, MD – Donte Bennett, a/k/a Tay, 27, of Baltimore, Maryland, has confessed to his part in a large-scale drug operation flooding Maryland and neighboring states with heroin, fentanyl, cocaine, and crack. Bennett pleaded guilty today to a federal drug conspiracy charge, admitting he knowingly participated in a network responsible for distributing lethal quantities of narcotics.
The case, spearheaded by U.S. Attorney for the District of Maryland Robert K. Hur, along with the FBI, DEA, Montgomery County Police, and Baltimore Police, reveals a chilling disregard for human life. According to authorities, the Drug Trafficking Organization (DTO) Bennett was involved with regularly pushed over 100 grams of heroin laced with fentanyl daily. Customers were routinely sold fentanyl without their knowledge, believing they were purchasing pure heroin. Bennett and other distributors worked around the clock, sharing phones to coordinate sales and maintain a constant supply.
The details laid bare in the guilty plea are particularly damning. Bennett and his co-conspirators were fully aware their product was causing overdoses. Intercepted communications revealed discussions about customers falling asleep or passing out after using their drugs. But the horror didn’t stop there. On November 10, 2018, Bennett sold 7.5 grams of heroin/fentanyl to a Virginia distributor, leading to two overdoses requiring Naloxone intervention.
The most harrowing admission? Bennett himself supplied his father with a user-sized quantity of the same deadly heroin/fentanyl mix on November 18, 2018. Just two days later, his father succumbed to an overdose – a lethal combination of heroin and cocaine. In a cold display of callousness, Bennett reportedly called a member of the DTO later that day, stating he believed his father had died from their drugs.
Throughout the conspiracy, spanning from October 2018 through at least January 2019, Bennett is confirmed to have distributed over one kilogram of heroin. U.S. Attorney Hur was blunt in his assessment: “Donte Bennett was part of a supply chain that distributed opioids—including deadly fentanyl—throughout Maryland and in Virginia, West Virginia, and Pennsylvania.” He added, “Drug traffickers are on notice that dealing in fentanyl increases their odds of federal prosecution and federal time.”
Bennett now faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in federal prison. Judge Paul W. Grimm has scheduled sentencing for January 19, 2020, at 10 a.m. While the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines will be considered, the gravity of Bennett’s actions – and the lives irrevocably damaged by his greed – will undoubtedly weigh heavily on the judge’s decision. This case serves as a stark reminder of the opioid crisis gripping the nation and the ruthless individuals profiting from the destruction it leaves in its wake.
